About Us
Mr. Barnes founded Barnes Funeral Home in 1981 to continue serving the public after his retirement from the City of Durham, NC. Joe, as he was affectionately called, enjoyed people and felt that serving the people would help to keep that connection. Mr. Barnes was a graduate of William Cooper Mason High School in Clayton, NC, attended A&T State University Greensboro, NC, Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. and the School of Restorative Arts in New York City. He served in the US Army and received an honorable discharge. After relocating to his home county of Johnston he became very active in the community, selling insurance and joined Johnston Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church. In 1998 his health began to fail him so he decided to teach what he knew of the business to his wife Eula Sanders Barnes, who was then an elementary teacher in the Johnston County School System. She soon became her husband’s caregiver and realized the need to take over the business. Mr. Barnes passed away in December, 2003.
