OUR HISTORY
Our History
Barnes Funeral Home was founded in 1981 by the late Mr. Joe Barnes, a proud U.S. Army veteran and lifelong servant of the community. After retiring from the City of Durham, he continued doing what he loved most—helping people. A graduate of Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science and the School of Restorative Arts, Mr. Barnes built a legacy rooted in compassion, dignity, and service.
As his health declined, he began teaching the business to his wife, Mrs. Eula Sanders-Barnes, who stepped in with grace and commitment. Upon his passing in 2003, she carried forward his vision of a local, family-owned funeral home dedicated to serving with excellence.

Our Leadership Today
Since 2000, Mrs. Eula Sanders-Barnes has faithfully managed Barnes Funeral Home, continuing her husband’s legacy while shaping her own. A former educator with degrees from North Carolina Central University and Meredith College, she later earned her funeral directing license from Fayetteville Technical College to better serve families in their time of need.
Deeply rooted in the Clayton and Johnston County community, Mrs. Barnes has long been active in her church and civic efforts. She is also licensed in pre-need insurance and a notary public, offering families trusted guidance beyond funeral care. Barnes Funeral Home proudly supports local programs such as the Clayton Police Department’s annual school supply initiative.
