Government Headstones and Markers

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides, at no cost to the applicant, a government headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any eligible veteran, in any cemetery worldwide. This benefit applies regardless of the veteran’s date of death.

For veterans who passed away on or after November 1, 1990, the VA may also furnish a government headstone or marker even if the grave is already marked with a private monument. In these cases, families may choose a traditional headstone or marker, or a newer style of device introduced in 2009.

The VA offers several styles to honor the veteran’s final resting place:

  • Flat markers in granite, marble, or bronze
  • Upright headstones in granite or marble
  • Niche markers for columbaria used for the inurnment of cremated remains

The style selected must be in harmony with the existing monuments in the cemetery.

Headstones National, State, and Military Cemeteries

When a veteran is laid to rest in a national cemetery, state veterans’ cemetery, or military post/base cemetery, the cemetery staff will order the government headstone or marker. The order will be based on inscription information provided by the veteran’s next of kin or authorized representative.

Spouses and Dependents

Spouses and dependents are eligible for a government-furnished headstone or marker only if they are buried in a national cemetery, state veterans’ cemetery, or military post/base cemetery. This benefit is not available for private cemeteries.

Cost Information

There is no charge for the government headstone or marker itself. However, when placed in a private cemetery, the family is responsible for:

  • Arranging delivery and installation
  • Paying any setting or placement fees

These expenses are not covered by the VA.
