Burial Flags for Veterans
The United States honors the service of every veteran with the presentation of a burial flag. This flag is provided at no cost to drape the casket or accompany the urn of an honorably discharged veteran. It serves as a lasting tribute to their dedication and service to our nation.
VA will provide a burial flag for:
- Veterans who served during wartime
- Veterans who died on active duty after May 27, 1941
- Veterans who served after January 31, 1955
- Peacetime veterans discharged before June 27, 1950
- Certain individuals who served in the military forces of the Commonwealth of the Philippines while under U.S. command and who died on or after April 25, 1951
- Certain former members of the Selected Reserves
Who Receives the Burial Flag?
In most cases, the burial flag is presented to the
next of kin as a keepsake following the funeral service.
If there is no next of kin, a close friend may request the flag on the veteran’s behalf.
Many VA national cemeteries that feature an Avenue of Flags accept donated burial flags from families. These flags are flown on patriotic holidays to honor all who have served.
How to Apply
A burial flag can be requested by completing
VA Form 27-2008 (Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes).
This form and the flag itself are available at:
- Any VA regional office
- Any U.S. Post Office
Most families find it easier to let the funeral director assist with this process, and we are always here to help.
Can the Burial Flag Be Replaced?
By law, the VA may issue only one burial flag for a veteran. If the flag is lost, stolen, or damaged, it cannot be replaced through the VA. However, local veterans’ organizations or community groups may be able to help families obtain another flag.
Displaying the Burial Flag
The proper method for draping, displaying, and folding the flag differs based on whether the casket is open or closed.
VA Form 27-2008 includes clear instructions.
Please note: Burial flags are made of cotton and not intended for outdoor display, as weather can damage the fabric.
